Escalating conflict in Gaza: Civilian casualties and humanitarian crisis

The continuing war in Gaza has had a dire effect on the inhabitants of the region in an untimely tragedy. The most recent information reveals that several assaults have killed at least 10 Palestinians – Haniyeh’s sister among them – in a camp for refugees in al-Shati.

In the saddest of situations, two other assaults took place in schools, and at least 14 people were killed, worsening the humanitarian situation in the area.

These are particularly evident in the situation in Gaza, which we see remains very precarious and where the prospects of famine are still large. Other sources indicate that 495 267 Palestinians cannot even afford a minimal diet, and the above crisis indicators show that the population is in a catastrophic situation.

In another attack, at least 10 Palestinians, some of who were guards controlling movement near aid trucks, were killed in a raid conducted by Israeli forces in the area where needy people go to access aid supplies in Khan Younis.

The UN has called for an end to the attack, with the UNRWA chief claiming that ‘Gaza has been destroyed’ and children are starving to death, and those who are alive are suffering from chronic malnutrition and dehydration; food and water are available on trucks waiting to be delivered.

The has taken its toll. The new death toll for Israeli from the Hamas-led attack has risen to 1139, not to mention the several dozens still in hostage in Gaza.

Mr. Netanyahu has also said that the war would remain ongoing had there been an agreement with Hamas; this is something that the Palestinian group has rejected as going against the ceasefire proposal provided by Mr. Biden.

While the conditions reported from Gaza are still appalling, the international actors are challenged to intervene and provide effective assistance towards resolving the humanitarian situation and the conflict as soon as possible.
