Escalating violence in Gaza: Al-Sayed family among casualties

Mahmoud Basal of the Palestinian Civil Defence in Gaza said that seven members of the al-Sayed family were killed, whose bodies were buried at home. Five more bodies were found in the street, bringing into sharp relief the continued violence.

In another incident, Israeli forces hit the area of Birkat Abu Rashid, killing at least three people and injuring scores more, Al Jazeera’s Anas al-Sharif reported. Rescue workers were seen urgently escorting survivors out of the badly damaged building as one person was carrying an injured child.

Reports quoted sources as saying Israeli troops are laying barrels filled with explosives to raze buildings in al-Faluja. The Jabalia refugee camp was set up during the 1948 war and has been repeatedly attacked over the last year. These orders come amidst continuing attacks by Israel after its orders for the total evacuation of northern Gaza, where around 400,000 Palestinians are still staying, according to UN estimates.

The UN’s human rights office said the Israeli military appears to be cutting off North Gaza “completely from the rest of the Gaza Strip.” The International Committee of the Red Cross voiced its concern on Friday that a week after hostilities broke out, more and more families were facing fear and loss, and safe routes needed to be guaranteed for the evacuation of civilians.

In other areas, an Israeli airstrike destroyed homes on al-Sinaa Street in west Gaza City, with two bodies recovered and a search ongoing for 12 others believed to be trapped. The central Gaza hit four Palestinians dead in the strike of a house in the Nuseirat camp. At least 10 family members died in an air raid on Bani Suheila; six others were killed in Khan Younis’s al-Fukhari district. According to the Health Ministry, at least 42,289 deaths and 98,684 injuries have been recorded since October 2023.
