Escalating violence: Israeli strikes in Gaza and Yemen

Israeli forces have stepped up the bombardment of Gaza; at least 16 Palestinians are dead, including children and a doctor at al-Ahli Arab Hospital, while ongoing violence in the northern besieged region draws international concern as humanitarian conditions worsen.

In a related escalation, Israel’s military said it had attacked what it called Houthi positions in Yemen, killing at least nine people. The assault included air raids on two power stations in Sanaa, as well as attacks on two ports and an oil facility in Hodeidah, according to local media. The strikes came after the interception of a missile fired from Yemen earlier in the day.

The UN has expressed frustration, saying Israel has repeatedly blocked requests for humanitarian aid into starving populations in Beit Hanoon, Beit Lahiya, and Jabalia, which have been under siege for more than 70 days.

In a related development, the Palestinian Authority has continued its operation in Jenin refugee camp in occupied West Bank targeting what the government described as “lawless elements” in that area.

Since the beginning of the Israeli military operation in Gaza on October 7, 2023, at least 45,097 Palestinians have been killed and another 107,244 injured in the conflict. In Israel, at least 1,139 people were killed and more than 200 taken hostage during the initial Hamas-led attacks that day.
