Fatal shooting at Bosnian school claims three lives

Three school staff were killed in a shooting incident at a school in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina, an official source reported. Those abducted were the principal and a secretary from the Sanski Most High School Center, as well as a teacher.

The event took place on a Wednesday at 4:15 PM GMT. The sources show that one of the school workers was involved in the shooting, which occurred when teachers gathered to discuss the further process of education in the new academic year. Thank God schools are closed for summer holidays so there was no student at this time.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Adnan Beganovic, said that the suspect used a military weapon, to be precise, an automatic rifle. There are media reports that the shooter tried to commit suicide after the shooting was done. An injured person is presently in critical condition and has been taken to Banja Luka Hospital.

Opening inquiries indicate the shooter could owe the school’s administration some money, but the police have not determined a motive.

Local authorities followed quickly to the scene as police started their work on the investigation of this tragedy. The region is still unstable because, after the wars of the nineties, it remained armed with small firearms. Nevertheless, mass shootings are rather unusual in Bosnia.

A study conducted by the United Nations Development Programme in 2010 approximated that there were about 750000 illicit firearms in Bosnia. The most recent large-scale shooting at a school in the Balkans was in May 2023 in Belgrade, Serbia: a teenager killed ten people, including his classmates.
