In a shocking incident in Sambalpur district of Odisha, a man and his son have been taken into custody for the alleged murder of his 90-year-old mother and 62-year-old sister. The charred bodies of Snehalata Dikshit and her daughter Sairendri were found on the first floor of their house in the Hatapada area on Tuesday night.
Categorized initially as an unnatural death, it rapidly escalated into a case of a murder investigation. Sambalpur Additional Superintendent of Police Ajay Mishra said,
“Interrogation of family members was conducted, which revealed the shocking nature of the crime, and Jagannath Dikshit, along with his son Sanket, was arrested.”
The police maintained that it was a deliberate act and a case of murder over a property dispute. During the investigation, it came out that both women were strangled, and then their bodies were set on fire. The final cause of death would be ascertained after the post-mortem report.
Indrani Purohit, Snehalata’s younger daughter, has accused her brother of committing the crime over disputes about land and property. The victims were staying on the first floor of a two-story building, whereas Jagannath was staying on the ground floor with his family.
Locals reported that they saw flames coming from the building between 10:30 PM and 11 PM on November 5, after which police were summoned. The police discovered the bodies burnt beyond recognition and initiated a proper investigation into this unfortunate case.
