Federer’s emotional tribute to retired Nadal

When Rafael Nadal faced the Spaniard Roger Federer for the first time in Miami in March 2004, he was only 17 and ranked only 34.

Swiss tennis great Roger Federer paid tribute to 22-time Grand Slam champion and former great rival Rafael Nadal on Thursday after the latter announced his retirement from the sport.

“What a career, Rafa! I always hoped this day would never come,” said 20-time Grand Slam winner Federer, who had retired through a social media post two years ago. “Thank you for the unforgettable memories and incredible achievements in the game we love. It’s been an absolute honor!”

Federer was world number one and had won the Australian Open and Indian Wells titles that year.

Their long-standing rivalry covered nearly two decades and ended in an emotional London goodbye at the Laver Cup in September 2022.

Nadal led their head-to-head count 24-16 with 6-3, clinching masterclass victories in Grand Slam finals, including his incredible Wimbledon victory in 2008, which is considered one of the best finals ever at the majors.

“When Roger leaves the tour, an important part of my life leaves too,” Nadal said through tears as he partnered Laver Cup doubles with 41-year-old Federer in the Swiss star’s final appearance last September.
