This time, a region on the Russian border in Kursk has been taken up as the current theatre of war between Russia and Ukraine, with engagements described as severe for the second day in a row.
The State of Russia has said its armed forces have managed to stop the pro-Kyiv forces from pushing further into Russian territory. Ministering said that it has counterattacked aerial and ground operations, where its forces have destroyed 50 Ukrainian armored vehicles, including seven tanks, eight armored personnel carriers, three infantry fighting vehicles, and 31 armored combat vehicles.
However, the Ukrainian military has not declared an attack on the southwestern Russian territory, saying that the Ukrainians had taken control of several settlements in Kursk.
In the Russian boasting of their achievements in responding to such attacks, the acting Kursk region governor Alexei Smirnov cited that air defenses reportedly shot down two Ukrainian missiles at night. It also said that during the night, four Ukrainian drones were shot down.
On Tuesday, the Russian ministry said that due to the Ukrainian units’ raids, reserve troops and aviation units were evacuated to the border in haste. Moscow said about 300 soldiers, 11 tanks, and more than 20 armored vehicles reportedly crossed the border.
The recent attack on the Kursk region has been described by Russian official bodies as yet ‘another act of terrorism’ on non-combatants. Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said apparently the attack was on a civilian population.
Violent confrontations in Kursk have claimed lives, with five people reported killed and roughly 28 injured in the region, authorities have said. The local Russian Health Ministry stated that six children were admitted for treatment after the unfortunate incident.
The Kursk region case raises the question of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as Russia accused Ukraine of attacking the civilian population and vice versa. There remains a focus on conflict, as the Kursk nuclear power station remains a flashpoint, and a major gas transhipping terminal for Russian euro exports is nearby.
