Baltimore bridge collapse after collision with ship, rescue operations underway.
A major bridge in Baltimore, US collapsed early on Tuesday after being struck by a large cargo ship, causing multiple vehicles and people to plunge into the river below.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge, built in 1977 and an essential link to the Baltimore Beltway, completely gave way when hit by the Singapore-flagged container ship DALI.
It is believed around 20 workers and seven cars fell into the Patapsco River after the accident which occurred around 0700 local time. Maryland Governor Wes Moore has declared a state emergency.
Baltimore City Fire Department communications chief Kevin Cartwright said divers have launched rescue operations at the site. Two people have been rescued so far, one in serious condition.
No one on board the DALI was injured. Attempts are ongoing to locate others who may have fallen in. Vehicles are being diverted as the route remains shut.
Mayor Brandon Scott, too, has reached the site of the “mass casualty” incident. The cause is yet to be determined.
Built for $735 million today, the 2.5 km bridge was instrumental in handling traffic to the Baltimore port, which sees 800,000 vehicles annually. Named after the writer of the US National Anthem, the collapse has triggered widespread disruptions.
