French president and UK PM to join Zelenskyy in US for peace talks

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to make a joint trip to Washington with Zelenskyy and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to show a united European face to Trump, the French government announced Wednesday.

Ukraine announced on Wednesday it would resume new negotiations with the United States after Washington suspended intelligence sharing, a new blow to Kyiv as it fights against Russia’s invasion.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been racing to try to contain the damage from his explosive encounter with Donald Trump last week, where the US leader publicly berated him and sent him packing from the White House.

“Today, the Ukrainian and American teams started working on a future meeting. We’re seeing positive movement,” Zelensky said in a late Wednesday press statement, without specifying when or where new talks would occur.

However, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his view that European military troops could be deployed to Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached to prevent Russia from invading its neighbour again. The United States earlier on Wednesday stated that it had “paused” sharing intelligence with Ukraine, two days after it also suspended military aid.

The actions have solidified worries in Kyiv and Europe that Ukraine may be compelled to agree to a peace deal on terms favorable to Moscow or face the loss of US support altogether.

“We all want to have a future safe for our people. Not a ceasefire temporarily, but putting an end to the war at last. And this is perfectly possible with our concerted action and US leadership,” Zelensky wrote Wednesday on social media after speaking with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

One day prior, he declared that he was “ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer,” and wanted to “make things right” with Trump.
