G4 Model looks to upturn UN power dynamics with expanded council

As the UN looks to reform its outdated Security Council, India presented a bold new model for the G4 nations that could shake up global power dynamics.

Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj unveiled the detailed proposal to wide applause, arguing the post-WWII body must reflect today’s geopolitical realities, not those of 1945.

The G4 plan would dramatically expand the Council from 15 to 25-26 members by adding six permanent seats – two for Africa and Asia and one for Latin America, Western Europe, and others.

Crucially, the new permanent members would be democratically elected by the General Assembly every year, a historic change from the current system, which awards permanent veto-wielding status solely based on World War II alliances.

While retaining veto flexibility to build consensus, the model promises to make the Council fairer and more representative of the modern world.

With the UN set to mark its 80th anniversary, momentum is building for long-overdue reforms. However, vested powers may resist lost privileges. Will members seize this opportunity for progressive change? The deliberations are poised to shake up the status quo.
