Gaza conflict escalates: Hamas claims killing of Israeli captive

The political and military confrontations between Hamas and Israel have reached a new level; the Qassam Brigades – Hamas’s military wing declared that it executed an Israeli captive and injured two more women captives.

A Hamas spokesman in a statement said that the Israeli was killed by his guards while efforts were being made to save the lives of the other female captives who were also seriously injured. Israel’s defense force admitted the allegations, though, that they lacked substantiating information.

The violence has elicited a noisy response in Israel, with protesters calling for an agreement that will release the captives. It has been made worse by increasing border tensions between Hezbollah and Israel, together with recent attacks that targeted a Hezbollah commander and a Hamas leader.

The United Nations Security Council is still planning to convene an urgent session after an Israeli airstrike that targeted a shelter in Gaza City and resulted in the death of more than a hundred Palestinians. Despite the earlier discussions on the halting of the war, the war is now even more escalated, and the Gaza death toll results from the war is approximately 40000.

In late July, the US, with Turkey and other countries, demanded a long-term cease-fire and the release of all hostages. In July, Qatar, Egypt, and the US set for new Gaza ceasefire talks on August 15.
