Gaza war drags as Israel vows continued attacks

Israel marks memorial, independence days amid Gaza war.

Israel commemorated Memorial Day and Independence Day in a sombre mood due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Addressing the nation on Memorial Day, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed never to forget Hamas’ “crimes” of October 2023 and ensure they are eliminated.

As the seven-month war drags on with failed ceasefire bids, the death toll in Gaza has crossed 35,000 according to officials, mostly women and children.

Analysts say Israel’s initial response was revenge-driven but objectives weren’t revised after degrading Hamas capacity. Earlier wars saw withdrawal after goals were met.

In contrast, the current campaign lacks strategy and plays to egos more than solutions. Allies are frustrated with no end in sight and walls closing in on Netanyahu.

After initial retaliation that degraded Hamas, continuous strikes to “eliminate” the group mirror past disproportionate responses condemned internationally.

As negativity rises with each passing day of human toll, observers say missed chances reflect a want for vengeance over a viable strategy to curb violence for all.
