Hamas is optimistic about achieving “real progress” towards a ceasefire deal to put an end to the ongoing war in Gaza. Top Palestinian movement officials are convening Egyptian intermediaries in Cairo, according to Saturday’s report.
The talks are being conducted even as violence continues in Gaza, where three rockets launched from the enclave were intercepted by Israel and responded with airstrikes and artillery fire in various areas of the territory. The Cairo negotiations follow recent remarks by United States President Donald Trump, where he stated that a hostage exchange deal was close to being finalized.
One Hamas delegate said that there was hope that the big breakthroughs would result from negotiations with Egyptian mediators. “We hope the meeting will make honest progress in getting towards an agreement to end the war, cease the aggression, and provide for full withdrawal of occupation forces from Gaza,” the delegate stated on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the negotiations.
