Hamas slams Biden over linking Gaza truce with hostage release.
The Palestinian militant group Hamas has strongly criticized recent remarks made by US President Joe Biden linking a ceasefire in Gaza to the release of captives held by the outfit.
In a statement, Hamas condemned Biden’s position, terming it a setback from what was agreed upon during negotiations with Egyptian and Qatari mediators over truce proposals. It asserted showing necessary flexibility at all stages, but Israel under PM Netanyahu reversed talks by attacking Rafah, Jabalia, and Gaza.
Hamas alleged Israel’s decision to escalate violence proves Netanyahu wants to continue the ‘genocidal war’ in Gaza while disregarding captive lives, highlighting US support for ‘criminal Zionist policies’. It accused Washington of giving political cover and arms to Israeli attacks to buy time for ‘operations of destruction, killing, and genocide in the Strip.’
Earlier, a Hamas official had said Israel delayed talks to invade Rafah fully, noting the regime’s lack of seriousness. As clashes intensified, residents spoke of the grim situation with continuous explosions and medical facilities struggling due to damage.
While violence surged, Hamas dismissed pressures demanding prisoner release for a truce. It reiterated that ceasefire negotiations must focus on the termination of the Gaza blockade and not be linked with other issues. As political rhetoric escalates, prospects of peace appear distant amid raging conflict.
