The ordeal that women undergo during the war is evident and sickening; they are made to sleep with soldiers in exchange for food and essential commodities.
As was highlighted in the report, more than a dozen of women who fled the Sudanese city of Omdurman narrated horrifying stories of being raped by soldiers unless they agreed to sleep with them, and this was the only way they could get food or some goods for their families.
The sexual abuse has apparently come out after the civil war that started in Sudan in April 2022, where the country’s army rebelled against the paramilitary RSF. Some of the women interviewed have described rigorous cases of rape by the RSF fighters in areas that the group dominates.
The suffering situation has been worsened by vices such as torture and acts of violence. A 21-year-old woman reported that when she rejected a soldier for intercourse, they pinned her down and set her legs on fire.
As the world continues to struggle with the situation in Sudan, the fate of these women is a painful example of the destructive effect of war and further proof that something has to be done right now to help the victims of the conflict.
