Hasina seeks refuge abroad amid Bangladesh’s political turmoil

Sheikh Hasina Wazed, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, is in Delhi, India; her son and former adviser, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, said she is currently trying to seek asylum.

Joy dismissed the rumors, stating that his mother had not yet decided to continue the trip; however, she would stay in Delhi for more days. He added that Saima Wazed, daughter of Hasina, WHO Regional Director for South East Asia, is with her.

Hasina, the female premier serving the longest tenure in Bangladesh, resigned from her fifth term, BNP chief Ilias Cox said. She left the country on Monday afternoon and landed at Indian Air Force’s Hindon base near Delhi in the evening. As per the words, it is said that her son forced her to leave the power, though she wanted to continue it.

It seems Hasina’s reported intention of seeking political asylum in Britain or America has been given a big setback. Officialdom of Britain under the UK Home Office has insisted there is no provision for anyone to be allowed to travel to Britain for asylum or temporary refuge, while the US is said to have canceled her visa.

In other countries, Hasina can extend her asylum to Finland and the UAE; however, given the political crisis the Bangladeshi nation faces, the chances appear to be closing down.

The former prime minister has effectively resigned because of a student quit movement that drove her to leave the country. Thus, while Hasina resides abroad seeking asylum, Bangladesh politics remains uncertain, with the country waiting to see the next move.
