Hezbollah faces growing pressure to Disarm amid regional challenges

Hezbollah is facing growing pressure to disarm, spearheaded by the United States and supported by a wide variety of Lebanese parties. The pressure follows the Israeli assault on Lebanon last year, which claimed the lives of top Hezbollah commanders and hundreds of civilians, including at least 200 children. The effect of this conflict, coupled with the weakening of Hezbollah ally Bashar al-Assad in Syria, has left the group vulnerable.

During a recent visit to Lebanon, Deputy US Special Envoy to the Middle East Morgan Ortagus reiterated the need to disarm Hezbollah, as Israel will not tolerate attacks from the group. She likened Hezbollah to “a cancer” that needs to be cut out and insisted on the necessity of economic reforms to restrict the activities of the group beyond the regulatory framework.

Despite mounting pressures, Hezbollah has not made public statements about disarming. Political analysts say that disarmament can only be considered in exchange for significant concessions. A senior Hezbollah official made a proposal regarding disarming if Israel withdraws from occupied territory, but this was later denied.

Although Hezbollah still enjoys some popular support, particularly in south Lebanon, the Lebanese army has asserted greater control over the region. There are concerns that further pressure on Hezbollah could ignite instability and internal unrest.

Hezbollah has traditionally been a strong military and political force with the Shia community as its core support base. Its influence, however, appears to be waning. There is a building consensus among Lebanese leaders that the state should be the sole decision-maker when it comes to arms, and this has been backed by President Joseph Aoun’s calls for dialogue.

With changing regional dynamics, discussions about Hezbollah’s future are becoming more reliant on international political will rather than local pressure.
