Hezbollah has fired more than 50 rockets at residents’ homes in the Israeli-occupied territory of Golan Height in what could be considered rising tension. The attack occurred on Wednesday, coming shortly after the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken sat down with the Egyptians and the Qatari delegations to appeal for the observation of cessation of hostilities due to the ongoing war in Gaza.
Hamas’ spokesman, in turn, claimed that the latest idea proposed to both sides by the mediators essentially goes against prior understandings and that the United States has been adjusting to new Israeli conditions. A response from the U.S. has not come, coming as it does after more than two weeks of arguments on the matter.
Eyewitness accounts also put the age of the male who received moderate shrapnel injuries from the Wednesday attack at 30 years old; one house was consumed by the fire. Fire fighters are reported to have prevented more calamity by halting a leakage of gas.
Hezbollah said it inherited the attack from an airstrike that Israel’s army conducted in Lebanon the other night, which led to one death and 19 more injured. On Tuesday alone, more than 200 projectiles had been lobbed into Israel by Hezbollah in response to the Israeli attack on a Hezbollah weapons store, escalating the fight.
More than ten months of sporadic rocket attacks and corresponding Israeli airstrikes between Israel and Hezbollah are depicted against the background of the Israeli operations in Gaza. This conflict has led to the death of more than 500 people in Lebanon – the greater part of them are militants, 100 civilians, as well as 23 soldiers and 26 civilians in Israel.
During the 1967 Middle East War, Israel occupied the Golan Heights from Syria and then later formally claimed the area, which it said was necessary to protect its security. All the other countries of the world consider the Golan Heights as occupied Syrian territory, while the United States has recognized this annexation.
