US Warships Repel Houthi Missile and Drone Attacks in Red Sea.
In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing conflict in the region, US naval vessels came under a sustained assault from Houthi fighters in the Red Sea, the Pentagon has confirmed.
The attack involved a barrage of missiles and drones, but the American ships were able to successfully defend themselves without sustaining any damage or casualties.
According to Pentagon spokesperson Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder, the incident occurred as the US warships were transiting through the strategically crucial Bab al-Mandeb strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.
The Houthi rebels, who have been engaged in a years-long conflict with the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, claimed responsibility for the attack.
In a statement, the Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said that the group had carried out “two specific military operations” against the US Navy, including targeting the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea with cruise missiles and drones, as well as attacking two American destroyers in the Red Sea with ballistic missiles and drones.
Major General Ryder refuted the claim about the attack on Abraham Lincoln, stating that he was unaware of any such incident.
The Pentagon spokesperson emphasized that all of the Houthi projectiles were successfully intercepted and defeated, with neither of the US Navy ships sustaining any damage or personnel being harmed.
The Houthi attacks on commercial and military vessels in the strategically crucial Red Sea and Gulf of Aden have been a growing concern for the international community. The group has claimed that these operations are in solidarity with the Palestinian cause, as Israel continues its military campaign in Gaza.
In response to the Houthi maritime attacks, the United States and the United Kingdom have conducted a series of air strikes on targets within Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, including recent operations that involved the deployment of B-2 strategic bombers.
The international community will undoubtedly be closely monitoring the developments in the region, seeking to find a path towards lasting peace and stability.
