Hours after Israel struck Sana’a’s airport early on Friday, Houthi rebels in Yemen later in the day claimed to have retaliated with a missile aimed at Israel’s Ben Gurion airport and a drone attack on Tel Aviv.
According to the report by The Guardian, the Israel Defense Forces said their defenses intercepted the ballistic missile before it reached Israeli airspace. However, residents in the country’s centre were ordered into shelters for fear of falling debris. There were no reports in Israel of hostile drones over Tel Aviv, added the report.
This was the latest in a string of tit-for-tat exchanges. Thursday’s Israeli airstrikes followed a Houthi missile and drone launch against Israel on Wednesday. The Houthis began targeting Israel and Israeli shipping at the outset of the Gaza war, which started in October 2023, claiming to act in solidarity with Palestinians.
A Houthi statement on Friday said the strikes “will only increase the determination and resolve of the great Yemeni people to continue supporting the Palestinian people.
