The US has received new intelligence that suggests Israel is possibly planning to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, CNN said. This is amid Washington’s engaging in nuclear negotiations with Tehran, which will decide whether Israel proceeds with military action.
The United States has obtained fresh intelligence indicating Israel is gearing up to make a potential military attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, CNN quoted several US officials as saying. This follows the Trump administration’s ongoing diplomatic talks with Tehran for a nuclear agreement, which was previously cancelled by Trump himself during his initial term.
Though no final decision has been reached to bomb Iranian nuclear sites, the officials knowledgeable about the intelligence indicate that the odds of a strike have increased sharply over the past several months. Whether Israel goes ahead will in great part depend on the course of the current US-Iran negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.
A source interviewed by CNN stated that “the possibility of an Israeli attack on an Iranian nuclear site has increased substantially,” especially if Washington’s agreement does not suppress Iran’s uranium enrichment completely. The new intelligence relies on public and private statements from top Israeli officials, intercepted communications of Israeli officials, and noticed military exercises that could indicate a potential strike, CNN said.
Two sources informed CNN that US officials had seen indications including the flight of air munitions and the finishing up of an air exercise as part of Israel’s military buildup.
