Imran Khan’s party seeks release of jailed leaders
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has submitted a resolution in the Senate calling for the release of its jailed top leaders, including former prime minister Imran Khan.
The resolution, tabled by PTI senator Falak Naz Chitrali, alleges the incarceration of party figures such as Khan, former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and others is a result of “false cases” instituted as part of political vendetta.
Khan and Qureshi are currently imprisoned in a high-security jail in Rawalpindi for various charges. If approved, the resolution will seek to free them as well as Bushra Bibi, Dr Yasmin Rashid and detained women activists and journalists.
It states the ongoing legal cases against PTI leadership have damaged the nation’s economy and global image. Similar demands were placed before the National Assembly earlier this week.
Last month, an anti-terrorism court sentenced Khan and his wife to 7 years for an ‘un-Islamic’ wedding ceremony. Before this, they were convicted of illegally selling state gifts and face 14 years in jail.
The former cricketer-turned-politician also serves a 10-year term for allegedly sharing classified details at a rally in March 2022. Khan and Qureshi were given the same punishment in the related cypher case by an FIA court last year.
Since his ouster from power, dozens of cases have been filed against Khan. However, the PTI maintains these are part of a vindictive drive to undermine the head of the opposition.
