A new global effort in the fight against cancer, known as the ‘Cancer Moonshot,’ is set to be launched during the Quad Summit. To this end, the Indian Cancer Genome Atlas has now been launched to help confront the various cancer issues prevailing in India. Industry majors opine that existing cancer therapies were once based on Western data, which causes issues, as India currently stands third in the global cancer map.
The release of the Cancer Genome Atlas is timely given that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) estimates the number of cancer incidences per annum is expected to rise from 1.46 million in 2022 to 1.57 million in 2025.
The Quad Summit in Philadelphia will be with Narendra Modi, Prime Minister, and Joe Biden, President of America and others with topics concerning world safety and cancer.
This CANCER MOONSHOT comes from President Biden and the First Lady of the United States to rethink cancer care, particularly prevention and support. The Indian Cancer Genome Atlas is building up datasets specific to the Indian population to help in the creation of treatment plans for patients. It is currently focused on 50 breast cancer patients with plans to reach 500 plus.
The goal of this project is to add value to cancer care for Indian patients and to better understand the molecular basis of cancer.
