India linked to failed plot against Maldivian leader Muizzu

A report alleged that Maldivian opposition politicians had planned to impeach President Mohamed Muizzu by bribing MPs and enlisting criminal gangs, reportedly seeking USD 6 million from India.

Politicians from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) allegedly approached India earlier this year with a plan to impeach Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu and sought USD 6 million, according to a report published by The Washington Post on Monday. However, the plan did not materialise, the report added.

The report, based on an internal document titled ‘Democratic Renewal Initiative’, revealed detailed plans to bribe as many as 40 members of the Maldivian Parliament, including some from Muizzu’s party, to secure the votes needed to impeach him.

Also, according to the document accessed by the US Daily, included in the schemes were paying several senior military and police officials and engaging assistance from three of the most powerful criminal gangs in the country to ensure Muizzu’s eviction from the office of the President.

“In an internal document titled ‘Democratic Renewal Initiative’ obtained by The Washington Post, Maldivian opposition politicians proposed bribing 40 members of parliament, including those from Muizzu’s party (People’s National Congress), to vote to impeach him,” the report said.

“To pay off the various parties, the conspirators sought 87 million Maldivian rufiyaa, or USD 6 million, and according to two Maldivian officials, it would be sought from India,” it added.
