India monitors Bangladesh-Pakistan military ties Post-Hasina ouster

India has voiced concern against the growing military engagements between Bangladesh and Pakistan after the recent ouster of the former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. With rising collaboration between its two neighboring countries, Indian authorities are remaining vigilant to developments that could affect national security.

At a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the government is pro-actively dealing with the situation. “We monitor all activities in the region that may impact national security and appropriate measures will be taken,” he said. The comments are the first response to reports about the Pakistani delegation led by ISI director general of analysis Maj Gen Shahid Amir Afsar visiting Bangladesh where he called on that country’s three service chiefs.

The visit follows a recent visit by a Bangladesh delegation to Islamabad, in what is seen as part of growing military relations between the two countries. Jaiswal said that India remains firm on issues concerning the security of the country while keeping good relations with Bangladesh. “We support a democratic, progressive, inclusive Bangladesh. Strengthening ties will benefit people of both nations,” he said.

During the briefing, he also allayed apprehensions voiced by Bangladesh concerning India’s proposals for border fencing. According to him, these steps aimed at preventing human trafficking, cattle-lifting, among other illegal activities consistent with agreements arrived between the two countries.

Ever since Hasina’s ouster, the relationship between India and Bangladesh has suffered considerably, marked by violent protests and rising unrest. Things began to aggravate further when Yunus’s caretaker administration proved incapable of saving minority communities, particularly the Hindus, from attacks that specifically targeted them in Bangladesh.
