Indians in the US weigh in on key issues in upcoming presidential polls.
Ahead of the US elections, Hindustan Times spoke to members of the Indian diaspora on what they see as important issues that need addressing by the next president.
As per an Indian-American survey, 61% backed Kamala Harris while 31% supported Donald Trump. However, not all those interviewed disclosed their preferences.
A 55-year-old research scientist from New York said he voted for the Harris-Walz duo due to concerns around “democracy, divisive rhetoric and progressive social policies.”
A physician in California termed it choosing the “less bad” as candidates focus more on criticizing opponents than solutions.
A Dallas IT professional highlighted affordable healthcare and stricter gun control as priorities. She believes both candidates are mature enough to further cement Indo-US ties.
A UC Santa Barbara PhD student said she would vote for Harris if eligible, citing abortion rights and immigration policy expansion as key issues. While ideologies matter, one’s individual opinion is also respected, said another.
Most emphasized addressing challenges like socio-economic disparities, climate change, affordable education, and harmonious community living through inclusive reforms and ceasefire in conflict zones.
Overall, there seems a consensus around a stable, cooperative, and people-centric leadership focussed on bridging divides for a prosperous future.
