Indian High Commission issues travel advisory amid UK social unrest

During the British City Social Unrest, the Indian High Commission in London offered a Travel Alert/Emergency for Indian persons intending to travel to the UK, advising them to be careful to avoid related occurrences.

The advisory has been issued following alleged attacks by violent protesters on migrants, particularly those of Muslim origin in Britain’s towns and cities. The incite for the unrest was the stabbing of three young girls from Southport last week, an act which anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim factions have capitalized on.

Far-right movements have stirred society through social media, thus resulting in confrontations between the protesters and the policemen. Although having British origin, the 17-year-old suspect involved in this case is not considered as a probable terrorist threat; however, this incident has created tension in the country.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also deplored the violence against Muslims and pleaded that the strength and the might of British law should be used to deal with the attackers. Another woman who censured the violence was the UK Interior Minister Yvette Cooper, who said that the attacks only encouraged racism and were an unjustified response concerning the immigration issue.

The advisory by the Indian High Commission adds to the situation, which must remind the UK of the challenges that persist. As for the government, it has expressed its intention to act and fight this trend, while the police have detained several hundred people since the start of the riots.
