India reiterates support for the Israel-Palestine two-state solution.
India has reiterated its backing for an independent Palestinian state at a UN meeting. Addressing the forum, India’s Permanent Representative Ruchira Kamboj said New Delhi is committed to facilitating a two-state resolution ensuring both sides’ security.
She emphasized India’s stance of the Palestinian people living freely in their own country with secure borders while respecting Israel’s security needs. The remarks reaffirm India’s long-held stance on the issue.
Earlier, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had termed the Palestinian deprivation of homeland and acknowledged Israel’s right to self-defense. He viewed the core matter as the Palestinians’ quest for nationhood.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the earliest global leaders to condemn Hamas’ October attacks on Israel. India has consistently advocated the two-state formula to resolve the protracted conflict.
Meanwhile, some US Democrats urged the Biden administration to dissuade Israel from launching a major assault on Rafah in Gaza amid escalating violence. Their letter flagged concerns over the worsening humanitarian situation with mounting casualties.
As tensions simmer, stakeholders will be watching India’s continued diplomacy to facilitate an agreement recognizing the mutual security interests and political rights of Israelis and Palestinians.
