Plane skids off runway in Indonesia’s Papua region, injuring passengers.
A Trigana Air aircraft carrying 48 people skidded off the runway at an airport in Indonesia’s Papua region on Monday morning.
The ATR-42 plane, en route from Yapen Islands to Jayapura, ran off the runway while taking off. Local police chief Ardyan Ukie Hercahyo confirmed that all 42 passengers, including an infant, and 6 crew members survived the incident. Some suffered injuries and trauma.
The remote location where the accident occurred added to rescue challenges in the mountainous Papuan terrain with frequent poor weather.
A search and rescue agency said the injured were transported to hospitals for medical attention. No fatalities were reported.
Papua police are investigating the cause of the skid-off incident to prevent recurrences, with aviation safety concerns in the region.
The archipelago relies heavily on air travel but Papua’s difficult access has seen past crashes, including a 2015 Trigana Air accident killing all 54 onboard.
Aviation experts will scrutinize factors leading to the skidding to ensure enhanced safety standards amid Indonesia’s challenging terrain and climate.
