International aid workers killed in Israeli Airstrike on Gaza

International aid workers from Australia, Britain, Poland, Palestine, and a dual US-Canadian citizen were tragically killed in an Israeli airstrike in central Gaza, according to a statement released by World Central Kitchen (WCK). The nonprofit organization, founded by renowned celebrity chef Jose Andres, expressed deep sorrow and condemned the attack.

The workers were part of a convoy traveling in two armored vehicles displaying the WCK logo and another vehicle. They had coordinated their movements with the Israeli Defense Force. They were leaving their warehouse in Deir al-Balah after unloading over 100 tons of essential food aid brought to Gaza by sea. Despite these precautions, the convoy was hit by the airstrike.

WCK CEO Erin Gore called the attack not only against their organization but also against humanitarian agencies that provide crucial aid in dire situations where food is being used as a weapon of war. She described the incident as unforgivable.

The Israeli military expressed its condolences and stated that a thorough review was being conducted to understand the circumstances of this tragic incident. The IDF emphasized its efforts to facilitate the safe delivery of humanitarian aid and highlighted its collaboration with WCK in providing food and aid to Gaza’s people.

In response to the attack, Jose Andres, deeply saddened and grieving for the families and friends of those who lost their lives, called on the Israeli government to cease indiscriminate killings, restrictions on humanitarian aid, and the use of food as a weapon, he emphasized the need for peace and shared humanity to prevail.

Hamas, the Islamist group governing Gaza, stated that the attack aimed to instill fear among workers of international humanitarian agencies, discouraging them from fulfilling their missions.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the death of an Australian aid worker and demanded accountability. He described the incident as a human tragedy and expressed Australia’s commitment to seeking justice.

The airstrike has prompted World Central Kitchen to suspend its operations in the region temporarily. The organization has been providing food relief and preparing meals for those in need, having served over 42 million meals in Gaza over the past months.

As the international community mourns the loss of these dedicated aid workers, calls for a thorough investigation and measures to protect humanitarian workers grow stronger. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those striving to alleviate suffering in conflict zones and the urgent need for peace and stability.
