Indonesia’s aviation authorities must investigate one of Indonesia’s local carriers, Batik Air, where the pilot fell asleep for almost 28 minutes during a mid-flight journey.
The accident happened on the Airbus A320 during a flight from Sulawesi to the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta. The thirty-two-year-old pilot, who was not recovering from the newborn notice, feared that he couldn’t perform his duty properly, so he gave command to his co-pilot, the father of one-month-old twins. Besides, the pilot lost consciousness, and the flight-control tower attempted for 28 minutes to communicate with the cockpit.
Eventually, the lead pilot responded to the call. The plan showed signs of crossing over the assigned flight path, and the aircraft safely landed with no injuries to the 153 passengers and crew. The pilots made pre-test medical certifications; however, no information was obtained on the said quality of sleep.
The Indonesian aviation authority has sanctioned Batik Air, stressing the critical role of crew time suits. Batik Air’s operations ensure adequate rest, and we are deliberative in implementing safety recommendations. This accident demonstrates the essentiality of abiding by the regulatory system, demanding at least two onboard pilots in a commercial aircraft.
