Iran Nominates diplomat Abbas Araqchi as new foreign Minister

Araqchi is a professional diplomat and pragmatist who was head of Iran’s nuclear negotiation team from the beginning of the deal-making process in 2013 to the moment of its revival in 2021.

It became known on Sunday that Iran’s speaker of the parliament, Masoud Pezeshkian, nominated Abbas Araqchi as the foreign minister of Iran on the Student News Network.

”Parliamentary commissions will from tomorrow morning be examining the plans of proposed ministers until the next working week,” said the parliament speaker, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, as Iran’s parliament is yet to endorse Pezeshkian’s appointed cabinet.

Araqchi is an experienced but cautious diplomat who was the head of Iran’s negotiating team in nuclear talks with the major powers between 2013 and 2021.

He was Iran’s ambassador to Turkey and Japan and was deputy minister of foreign affairs for Asia Affairs for two years before he assumed the post of ministry spokesmanship in 2013 briefly.

Araqchi became the second most powerful figure at the foreign ministry during Mohammad Javad Zarif’s time as foreign minister and wore many hats, such as deputy minister for legal and international affairs and deputy minister for political affairs.

He possesses a PhD in political thought, which he obtained from the University of Kent.
