Iran to open clinics for women defying hijab laws

These clinics will be named “hijab removal treatment clinics,” and these will offer “scientific and psychological treatment for hijab removal.”

Iran reportedly wants to open a clinic that would specifically treat women who defy the country’s mandatory hijab law. Mehri Talebi Darestani, the head of the Women and Family Department of Tehran Headquarters for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, has told Iranian news outlets that Iran will soon open a series of “hijab removal treatment clinics.”

In the past years, Iran has been a witness to immense protests, some large in number, such as the 2022-2023 protests carried out by women who were demanding an end to moral policing and physical assault by morality police any time those forces spot women not covering their heads properly.

This center will be founded to scientifically and psychologically treat the hijab-removing trend only among teenagers, young adults, and women who seek social and Islamic identity. A visit to this center is not obligatory,” Talebi quoted by Iran International.

The Women and Family Department in Tehran’s Headquarters for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice reports directly to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It is in charge of developing and enforcing Iran’s hardline religious laws, particularly those dictating what women must wear.
