Tensions rise as Iran warns of response to Israeli attack.
Iran has said it communicated to the US its intention to retaliate against Israel for an airstrike on its consulate in Syria last week.
According to reports, Tehran “asked the US to step aside” so forces would not get caught in the crossfire. Washington, in turn, conveyed to Iran not to target American assets.
As tensions escalate in the region, the US is on high alert for possible Iranian reprisals against Israeli or American targets, citing officials. Networks reported the Biden administration conveyed to Iran it was unaware of the Damascus strike.
No comments have been forthcoming from the US on the reported communications.
Tehran has vowed a “slap” for Israel but timing and modalities remain unclear. Analysts say Iran may carry out attacks directly or through proxies like Hezbollah.
The powerful Lebanese militia has reiterated preparations for any war with Israel. Its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, asserted retaliation is certainly coming from Iran without elaborating.
All parties are on edge as the possibility of escalation rises following recent cross-border violence and Iran’s accusations against regional rival Israel. De-escalation efforts will be critical amid an increasingly volatile situation.
