Iran’s President’s visit aims to reset ties with Pakistan.
Islamabad: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi arrived in Pakistan on a three-day state visit, seeking to reset bilateral relations strained by cross-border tensions earlier this year.
According to Pakistan’s foreign office, Raisi—accompanied by his spouse and a high-level delegation—will meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other officials. During his visit, which ends Wednesday, he will also travel to Lahore and Karachi.
The two neighbors have had warm ties but witnessed unprecedented military clashes in 2022, during which tit-for-tat strikes were carried out. Raisi’s trip now aims to nurture the trade and security relationship between the key regional players.
Amid tight security arrangements in Islamabad, including road closures, the Iranian delegation includes Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and other cabinet members.
Karachi has declared a public holiday as the President visits Pakistan’s southern port city. Discussions are expected to focus on boosting cooperation despite the political transitions in both nations recently.
Observers say the visit signifies both countries’ desire to turn the page on tensions and pursue mutual understanding, crucial for peace in a volatile region with complex power interplays.
