Iran’s Khamenei calls for display of power following Israel strike

Iranian officials are faced with a decision on the most credible way to show Tehran’s muscles to Israel following an Israeli airstrike against Iranian targets two nights ago, the official IRNA news agency said. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ruled that the “evil committed by the Zionist regime” should neither be downplayed nor exaggerated.

Iran said on Saturday that an Israeli air raid, which struck military targets, had caused only limited damage. The statement came after U.S. President Joe Biden called for easing tensions as fears of a broader conflict in the Middle East increase.

Scores of jets struck missile factories and other strategic sites around Tehran, and in western Iran with three waves of attacks, the Israeli military said.

Khamenei added that Iran needs to demonstrate strength, but officials must decide what form that should take in accordance with the best interests of the country and its people.
