Iran’s nuclear doctrine may shift in response to Israeli threats

An Iranian advisor to the supreme leader had mentioned that Iran would change its nuclear doctrine in case of Israel’s existential threat. Although Iranian officials voice the peaceful nuclear plans repeatedly, this statement of an Iranian leader has raised a question about the peaceful nature of the Iranian Nuclear Program.

The West’s countries generally cannot buy the fact that Iran denies that it plans to develop weapons of mass destruction. Still, they are apprehensive about the purpose of the atomic program it is implementing. Sanctions against Iran have accompanied this uncertainty in the case.

On standoff moments with Israel, an Iranian senior Revolutionary Guards commander addresses that threatening behavior by Israel could cause Iran to change its Nuclear Doctrine. Kamal Kharraz, a mentor to the Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has re-emphasized the importance of the country’s non-nuclear stance, evidencing that the country’s current plan is to develop a nuclear weapon. At the same time, it also clearly underlines that any security risk to the nation shall be combated through militarization.

In 2022, Kharrazi pointed out the Iranian ability to produce nuclear bombs but highlighted that no decision had been made to go further in that goal. During the era of Khamenei, a fatwa or religious decree was issued barring the research of and the employment of nuclear weapons, which are forbidden in Islam.

The exerting influence of the Western powers was the precondition for the Iranian ex-minister to negotiate so, he expected the situation of Iran might force the country to build nuclear bomb in 2021. The statements of Kharrazi that Iran would retaliate against such an act evidenced that Iran’s deterrence strategy was reviewed following an Israeli nuclear facilities attack. While these words still create tensions in Iran’s nuclear activities, it’s a baffling question about whether Iran sincerely plays a role in the dimension of nuclear.
