Iranian President to attend BRICS summit in Russia amid tensions with West.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will take part in the upcoming BRICS summit in Russia from October 22-24, according to Iran’s ambassador in Moscow.
The summit in Kazan will provide an opportunity for Pezeshkian to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. This visit comes at a time of escalating tensions between Iran and Western nations over military cooperation between Tehran and Moscow.
The US Secretary of State had alleged Russia received ballistic missiles from Iran for use in Ukraine. In response, Iran had denied delivering any missiles to Russia. Fresh sanctions have also been imposed on Iran by Western powers.
However, Iran and Russia are expected to sign a bilateral comprehensive cooperation agreement on the sidelines of the BRICS conference.
The summit involving major emerging economies will enable high-level interactions between the two allies facing mounting pressure from the West.
Iran’s participation in the multi-nation event in Russia is seen as part of efforts to strengthen ties amid the geopolitical challenge.
