Iraq said on Monday, October 28, that it had sent a formal complaint to the United Nations over Israel’s use of its airspace to carry out strikes against Iran at the weekend.
According to local news agencies, the complaint was sent to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council. Iraqi government spokesperson Bassim Alawadi condemned Israel’s actions and called them “a flagrant breach of Iraq’s airspace and sovereignty” during the October 26 bombings.
The airstrikes hit Iranian missile facilities and other strategic sites in retaliation for an Oct. 1 Iranian missile attack on Israel; three waves of jets, according to the Israeli military, took to the skies to cripple Iranian military capabilities.
In turn, Iran said that four soldiers were killed as the result of those strikes, claiming all damage was minor. The Iranian foreign ministry has declared that the country has the right and duty to defend itself against foreign aggression, as provided for under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
On the same day, the chief commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards firmly warned Israel that it would experience “bitter” consequences regarding its continuous attacks on Iranian military facilities.
Tasnim news agency quoted Hossein Salami saying the air raids by Israel had failed to achieve their objectives. It was a “miscalculation and helplessness” on the part of the Israelis in their “blind war” against Gaza and Lebanon.
