Is Bangladesh in crisis? Key mistakes and current perspectives

Bangladesh, which was providing hard competition to nations such as India in the garments textile industry, is currently undergoing its worst food and economic crisis. The poor policies of the Yunus administration have put the nation in an unstable situation.

From the Army to students and even the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace laureate and interim government chief of Bangladesh, has been isolated by all major players, but he is determined to remain.

Ever since the removal of ex-PM and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in exile, her fierce critic Yunus had come to be an overwhelmingly accepted candidate to govern the nation. Other than the Awami League, other political parties, intellectuals, and the Army had supported Yunus to be the caretaker president until the general elections were announced.

But seven months later, the Yunus interim government’s decisions have weakened Bangladesh. Bangladesh, which was providing stiff competition to nations like India in the textile garment industry, is now experiencing its worst economic and food crisis. The Yunus government’s poor decisions have placed the country on the brink.

The Army and student groups who were supporting Yunus have now openly begun questioning his leadership and his plan to declare the elections. The Army chief is keeping the caretaker government on its toes by pressurizing it to declare the elections, which is not being accepted by many of the advisers in the Yunus government.

Nahid Islam, the protest leader against Hasina and, at the same time, a government member, has resigned and will most probably be named the convener of a new political front. Islam will lead the National Citizen Party (NCP). A political front led by a disciple is the second setback for Yunus.

The other key political force, the BNP also made statements against Yunus. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul stated the people will not accept an interim administration remaining in power for a prolonged time. BNP Chief Khaleda Zia also urged early elections with limited reforms to mend the state. Khaleda Zia spoke to BNP cadres in effect from London.
