An Axios report said on Sunday, October 20, that Israel reportedly handed the United States its wish list for a diplomatic resolution of the war in Lebanon.
That list of demands was shared last week ahead of American envoy Amos Hochstein’s visit to Beirut on Monday, October 21, to discuss a diplomatic solution to the current battle.
According to the report, two US officials and two Israeli officials report that Israel had insisted that its IDF forces be allowed active enforcement to prevent Hezbollah from rearming and rebuilding military infrastructure in southern Lebanon near the Israeli border.
These demands are likely to encounter stiff resistance.
An official speaking to Axis points out that Lebanon, not to mention the international community, will not accept these terms because they infringe upon Lebanon’s sovereignty.
The demands also contradict UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which assigns peacekeeping duties to the LAF and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, or UNIFIL.
“Our basic message is that if the Lebanese army and UNIFIL do more, the IDF will do less and the other way around,” he added.
