Israelis demand ceasefire amid protests over captive deaths

About 50000 Israeli protestors came on the roads to protest for a ceasefire when six more captives were discovered dead in Gaza. Midnight protests occurred on a Sunday night, which was some of the biggest anti-government demonstrations witnessed in the region within the past 11 months of the Gaza war. People called for Premier Benjamin Netanyahu to negotiate a ceasefire with Hamas for the release of all still under captivity.

Hearings by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum claimed that the death of the six hostages was due to Netanyahu’s inability to bring a stop to the war. Gil Dickmann, a close of one of the victims, said that citizens of the state of Israel must put pressure on the government to ensure that their dear ones are brought back home.

In a historic move, the largest trade union in Israel, Histadrut, called for a general strike to pressure the government into halting the fighting. Some of the areas affected are the banking and healthcare industries, while the Ben Gurion Airport will be shut from as early as 8 a.m. on Monday.

The negotiations for the ceasefire have been frozen for as long as several months, with many people pointing accusing fingers at Netanyahu. The Israeli military is still getting more account of the losses, and they have also admitted to the challenges they are facing while trying to rescue other captives in Gaza.
