Jailed ex-PM Imran Khan seeks bail in May 9 riot cases

Self-exiled former Prime Minister Imprisoned of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party called Imran Khan has petitioned the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad for bail in 12 cases out of the political uprising that started on May 9, 2023.

Salman Safdar, Khan’s lawyer, has duly developed and submitted the bail petitions indicating that there is no indication of recovery from the former Prime Minister. In the petitions, cases against Khan have been alleged to be one with malice and that they are political revenge.

However, recently, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has smoothed out Khan somewhat by NULLING his physical remand in several May 9 cases. After a hearing of the prosecutor general and Khan’s counsel, the LHC division bench, which consisted of Justices Tariq Saleem and Anwarul Haq, handed down the order.

Its occurrence across the country began when Khan was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a 190 million pound corruption case on 9 May.

There are more than 200 cases against the ex-cricketer, who has turned a politician, with 3 cases in which he was convicted to imprisonment on the charges of Toshakhana corruption, cipher, and un-Islamic marriage. Bushra Bibi, his wife, is also in jail.

However, even after bailing out or getting his convictions quashed, Khan has remained in prison, while the PTI thinks that he is being briefly framed by some combination of the military to remain out of planned political activity.
