Microblogging site Twitter, under new owner Elon Musk, is set to host live town hall events with former US President Donald Trump and independent candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr in the run-up to 2024 polls. This comes after Trump’s account suspension post-January 6 Capitol riots was reversed last year.
Dates and moderators are yet to be finalized but the interactive forums will entail audience questions, likely involving NewsNation journalists. While President Joe Biden declined a similar invite, Trump has his first debate in June.
The development comes at a time of increasing bonhomie between Musk and Trump, even as the Tesla chief expressed crypto policy related discussions never happened. Reports suggest senior company official Linda Yaccarino roped in Musk for balancing political discourse.
Trump has posted on the platform after his ban was lifted, though Musk denied advising role rumors. The billionaire did share some displeasure towards Biden’s governance.
Musk recently honed in with tech leaders discontented with Biden’s possible reelection. Owing to economic woes and policy skepticism, polls show Trump ahead in swing states once more.
With First Amendment-centric changes, Twitter under Musk aims to host differentiated political content. However, in the bitterly polarised atmosphere, criticism of a biased approach can also be ruled out.
