Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign announced a big fundraising haul over the weekend, bringing in $55 million overall from two high-profile events.
Of that, $27 million flowed in on Saturday during a fundraiser featuring remarks from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a performance by the singer Andra Day at San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts, said a campaign official, who asked for anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information.
From there, it was off to downtown Los Angeles for the $28 million event headlined by Alanis Morissette and Halle Bailey and featuring Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Demi Lovato, Jessica Alba, Lily Tomlin, and Stevie Wonder, among the notables.
During these events, Harris steered the conversation back to her economic policies; at times, she even referred to herself as a capitalist and framed the election as one of those pivotal moments in the future. She exuded optimism for her campaign yet simultaneously brought that optimism down a peg, with the framing of an underdog, in just weeks until the election.
Her campaign, combined with the Democratic Party, raised a record $361 million in August, giving her an unprecedented financial edge over Republican opponent Donald Trump, who raised $130 million for the month with the Republican Party.
With the presidential election due on November 5, both candidates are in a neck-and-neck race. A recent Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll showed Harris leading Trump 47% to 40%, but other polls indicate the race is closer.
