Kashmir votes in the first election since the removal of special status.
Srinagar: Voting began in Kashmir for district polls, the first since Delhi scrapped the region’s autonomy in 2019. Over 9 million eligible voters will elect representatives to the 90-seat legislative assembly with powers over local issues.
After the initial phase on Wednesday, the second and third rounds will be held later this month with results due on October 8.
Political analysts say the polls have become a referendum of sorts on the Article 370 move, which angered many but ensured normalcy as per New Delhi.
The PM has urged high voter turnout to strengthen democracy as in the state polls earlier this year that saw 58% participation.
While armed groups have targeted past Kashmir votes, the region saw its highest turnout in decades then.
Key issues include restoring special status, jobs as unemployment is double the national average, and the release of detained youth. “I will vote hoping it helps address job woes or those in jail for years,” said student Tabinda Arif.
With peace and development priorities, the polls come amid enduring tensions over the future of the disputed zone.
