Knife attack in Shanghai supermarket leaves three dead, 15 injured

A knife attack in a Shanghai supermarket on Monday evening has killed three people and injured another 15, local police reported on Tuesday. The suspect, the 37-year-old man with the surname Lin, was arrested at the scene.

Police officials said the attack was motivated by a “personal financial dispute” that led Lin to commit the violence. Of the 18 people taken to hospitals, three died, and the other 15 reportedly had injuries that were not life-threatening.

Violent knife crimes are relatively common in China, where tight gun controls create the conditions for such occurrences. Similar attacks have targeted schools and other public places in recent years.

In September, a Japanese schoolboy was stabbed in Shenzhen and died from his injury-a tragic incident that triggered outrage in Japan. In May, one man killed eight people, injuring another in Xiaogan, Hubei province, in a knife assault.
