Speaking at the General Assembly in New York, Macron also supported the candidacy of Brazil, Germany, Japan, and two countries from Africa.

“Let’s make the UN more efficient. We need to make it more representative, and that’s why France is in favor of the Security Council being expanded,” he said.

Germany, Japan, India, and Brazil should be permanent members, along with two countries that Africa will decide to represent them,” he added.

The Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations and is responsible for maintaining international peace and security.

It has 15 members: five permanent members with veto power (the United States, China, France, Russia, and the United Kingdom) and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.

The Council’s main activities include investigating conflicts, establishing peacekeeping operations, imposing sanctions, and authorizing military actions when necessary.

It plays an essential role in resolving global crises and conflicts, making it a crucial actor in international diplomacy.

Why Are Reforms The Need Of The Hour?

The topic of equal representation has been on the agenda of the Assembly since 1979. However, the cries for reform grew louder amid widening conflict worldwide.

The United Nations General Assembly completed its consideration of Security Council reform in November 2022, when member states agreed that this 15-member institution needed to be made more contemporary if the United Nations was to remain relevant.

The UNSC’s failure to pass resolutions to stop the Russia-Ukraine war raises questions about the veto power granted to some permanent members.
