Malaysia halts search for Indian woman in 26ft sinkhole

G. Vijaya Lakshmi was 48- years -old when she plunged into the sinkhole in Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur, on August 23rd in the middle of the newly formed sinkhole on Jalan Masjid and has not been seen again.

The hunt for an Indian woman in Malaysia was called off on Saturday after the authorities said the search was proving to be’very difficult,’ nine days after she fell into a sinkhole.

J. Vijaya Lakshmi, 48 years old, an accountant, was trapped into the sinkhole in the Malaysian capital in the middle of August 23 in Jalan Masjid and has been missing since then.

The Prime Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, said that the operation was conducted following a technical and expert advisory report on the operation, which has been extended to its ninth day as reported by The Malay Mail on Saturday.

The coordinated SAR, together with the consideration from the Cabinet, the police, the search team, geologists, etc., it has been nine days, and we have decided to cease the search today,” she said at the scene of the sinkhole.

Dr. Zaliha said that during the search process the team found an obstruction, but they could not identify it accurately.

“At this point, we also have to consider the safety of the SAR personnel involved, as conditions for the SAR were extremely challenging,” she was quoted as saying by the Malay Mail.

She also said the emergence of the second sinkhole added worry of possibly elevated danger to the search team as well.

“Besides that, we need to go back to the normal life here and make sure that the people who are using these streets are safe.” The minister also said that although the SAR has been called off, the search for the woman will continue, but in different forms and operated by different agencies.
