Maldives’ shift away from Anti-India stance welcomed by experts

For the most part, Jaishankar is on a three-day official visit to the Maldives to redesign the raw relations between the two countries for the first time after the emergence of a new Chinese-leaning President, Muizzu, last year.

The Maldivian Democratic Party’s reaction has been that the President Mohammad Muizzu-led government has been a’suddent turner’ on India policy, and Male has always been sure that India would be the first to respond any time Maldives ‘dials an international 911.

MDP is the main opposition of the incumbent Maldivian government. Abdulla Shahid, the president of MDP, said this after a meeting with the Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday.

The president of the MDP stated that his party “I urge the Muizzu government to offer a public apology for the actions, lies, and irresponsible comments from its officials leading to incalculable losses of the Maldives’ foreign and economic image.”

Former foreign minister of the Maldives Ibrahimuddin Shahid, in a statement, announced and expressed great pleasure to warm welcome and to meet the Indian External Affairs Minister, Dr. S Jaishankar, to the Maldives and my colleagues of @MDPSecretariat @xMultiplicity this Saturday night at ‘X’ late night.

“The Maldives has always been assured that India will be the first to answer any emergency call when the Maldives punches the ‘IP handset’ that dials an international 911,” he said.

He said that the incitements of anti-Indian sentiments after all the rhetorical slogans and jeers by the current ruling government, as well as labeling a longtime diplomatic and economic ally and friend as a regional menace, have led the Maldives to deteriorate in the international community rankings, suffer economically, and face many other avoidable hardships and hurdles.

Based on this premise, the MDP welcomes the sudden shift of the Maldives-India policy of President Muizzu’s government from its previous India.
